Haptoglobin

A haptoglobin test measures haptoglobin, a protein that rises with inflammation and infection. It is used mainly in cows and buffaloes, and also in dogs, as a general alarm signal rather than a test for one disease.

What this test checks

  • Haptoglobin, an acute-phase protein made by the liver during inflammation
  • A general signal that inflammation or infection may be present
  • A fall that can go with red cells breaking down inside the body

When your vet may advise it

  • A cow or buffalo with fever, poor appetite or a sudden drop in milk
  • Checks after calving when a womb or udder infection is a worry
  • A dog with signs of illness where your vet wants a marker of inflammation
  • To help separate an inflammatory problem from a simple digestive upset in a cow

About this test

Haptoglobin is an acute-phase protein, one of the proteins the liver makes in larger amounts when the body is fighting inflammation or infection. In cows and buffaloes the level is normally very low, so a rise is a useful sign of problems such as mastitis, a womb infection after calving, pneumonia or a swallowed wire. In dogs it rises more gently, and steroid medicines or Cushing's disease can also raise it. Because haptoglobin binds free haemoglobin, it can fall when red cells break down inside the body. It does not name the disease, so a registered veterinarian interprets it alongside the examination and history.

How to prepare

The test uses serum from a plain tube. For dogs, tell your vet about any steroid medicines, as these can change the result. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Questions about Haptoglobin

What does high haptoglobin mean in a cow?
High haptoglobin in a cow means the body is reacting to inflammation or infection somewhere, such as the udder, womb, lungs or stomach wall. It does not show where the problem is, so your vet uses the examination and other tests to find it.
Is haptoglobin the same as a CRP test?
No, but both are acute-phase proteins that rise with inflammation. CRP is used mainly in dogs, while haptoglobin is a key marker in cows and buffaloes and is also measured in dogs. Your vet chooses the marker that suits the species and the question.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
