Glutamate Dehydrogenase (GLDH)
A GLDH test measures glutamate dehydrogenase, an enzyme found inside liver cells. In cows and buffaloes, a rise can point to liver cell damage, and it is often read next to AST and GGT.

What this test checks
- GLDH, an enzyme released into the blood when liver cells are damaged
- Signs of active liver cell injury, read together with AST and GGT
When your vet may advise it
- A cow or buffalo that is off feed, losing weight or giving less milk without a clear cause
- Suspected liver fluke in animals grazing near water or wet land
- Fresh animals that eat poorly after calving, when fatty liver is a worry
- Animals that may have eaten toxic plants or mouldy feed
About this test
Glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) is an enzyme that sits inside liver cells. When these cells are damaged, GLDH leaks into the blood, so a raised level can point to active liver injury. In cows and buffaloes it is often read with AST, which can also come from muscle, and GGT, which tends to rise when the bile ducts are affected. Problems that may raise it include liver fluke, fatty liver in high-yielding animals around calving, and some plant or mould poisons. A registered veterinarian judges the liver picture from GLDH, AST, GGT, the animal's signs and the herd history.
How to prepare
A plain serum sample is needed, and gentle handling helps, as broken red cells can affect some liver results. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
