Fructosamine
A fructosamine test shows the average blood sugar level of a dog or cat over the past one to three weeks. It helps vets look for diabetes and check how well sugar is being controlled.

What this test checks
- Fructosamine level in serum (sugar attached to blood proteins)
- Average blood sugar over roughly the past one to three weeks
- Sugar control between clinic visits in a pet that already has diabetes
Benefits of this test
- Helps tell true diabetes from a short, stress-related rise in blood sugar, which is common in cats.
- Shows how well sugar has been controlled over recent weeks, not just on the day of the visit.
- Needs only one serum sample, and a recent meal does not change the result much.
- Helps your vet decide whether a pet's diabetes care plan needs changes.

When your vet may advise it
- A dog or cat that drinks and urinates much more than usual or loses weight while eating well.
- A cat with high blood sugar at the clinic, when the vet wants to know if stress is the cause.
- A pet already diagnosed with diabetes, to check how well the sugar has been controlled.
- A diabetic pet that is still very thirsty or losing weight.
- When your vet wants a longer view of sugar control than a single glucose test gives.
About this test
Fructosamine forms when sugar (glucose) sticks to proteins in the blood. The longer blood sugar stays high, the more fructosamine forms. These proteins stay in the blood for days to weeks. So the value shows the average sugar level over the past one to three weeks.
A random glucose test is like a photograph of one moment, and it can jump with stress, especially in cats. Fructosamine looks back over the last few weeks instead. The lab measures it in serum, the clear part of clotted blood, with special chemicals and an instrument.
Vets use it to help tell diabetes from a short rise in sugar caused by stress. It also shows how well diabetes has been controlled between clinic visits. This test is offered for dogs and cats.
How to prepare
Fasting is usually not needed, because a recent meal does not change fructosamine much, but follow your vet's advice. Do not change your pet's food or medicines before the test unless your vet tells you to. Call or WhatsApp us for free collection in Bhopal, or ask your vet to send the serum to our lab by courier or bus parcel.
Reading the result
A registered veterinarian reads fructosamine together with your pet's signs and history and its glucose results. Low blood protein or thyroid disease can change the value, so your vet decides whether more tests or changes to the care plan are needed.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Same day to 24 hours. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
