Cholinesterase (Pseudocholinesterase)

Cholinesterase (Pseudocholinesterase)

A cholinesterase test measures an enzyme that falls when an animal is poisoned by organophosphate or carbamate pesticides. It is a screening tool for dogs, cats, cows and buffaloes, not a full poison screen.

What this test checks

  • Pseudocholinesterase, an enzyme found in serum or plasma
  • A low level that may support organophosphate or carbamate exposure
  • A fall linked to severe liver disease, which also lowers the enzyme

When your vet may advise it

  • Sudden drooling, trembling, tiny pupils, diarrhoea or breathing trouble
  • An animal that may have eaten or licked crop pesticide, treated grain or insect spray
  • Several animals in a herd falling sick soon after fields or sheds were sprayed

About this test

Organophosphates and carbamates are chemicals found in many crop pesticides and some insect sprays. They block cholinesterase, an enzyme that helps nerves switch off, and this can cause drooling, trembling, tiny pupils, diarrhoea and breathing trouble. This test measures pseudocholinesterase, the form found in serum or plasma, and a low level supports exposure to these chemicals. Liver disease can also lower it. A normal level does not rule out poisoning, especially with carbamates, and other poisons are not checked. A suspected poisoning is an emergency, so take the animal to a vet at once. A registered veterinarian interprets the level with the signs, possible exposure and history.

How to prepare

Get the animal to a vet first; the vet can take the blood sample. Keep any pesticide container or label to show the vet. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Questions about Cholinesterase (Pseudocholinesterase)

Can a blood test show pesticide poisoning in a cow?
A cholinesterase test can support poisoning by organophosphate or carbamate pesticides, which lower this enzyme. It cannot detect other poisons or name the exact chemical. A poisoned cow needs a vet straight away, and the test is read alongside the signs and the history of spraying or feed.
Does a normal cholinesterase result mean my dog was not poisoned?
Not always. Carbamate effects can wear off quickly, sample handling can change the level, and other poisons do not affect this enzyme at all. If your dog shows signs of poisoning, your vet will act on the signs and may use other tests as well.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
