Often discussed at these ages:Senior Dog

When your vet may advise it

  • A dog with fainting, cough, tiredness or breathing trouble
  • A dog with a heart murmur or an irregular heartbeat
  • Following up heart disease, as your vet advises
  • Before surgery in a dog with a known heart problem

About this test

Troponin I is a protein found inside heart muscle cells. When these cells are injured, troponin I leaks into the blood, and the test measures how much. A raised level suggests heart muscle injury, but it does not say what caused it, and a normal level does not rule out all heart problems. Vets use the result together with the dog's signs, an ECG, a heart scan and often an NT-proBNP test. A dog with breathing trouble or fainting needs a vet at once. The lab report shows the reference range, and a registered veterinarian interprets the result with the dog's history.

How to prepare

No fasting is needed. Blood is taken into a plain tube or a heparin tube, as your vet advises. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Questions about cTnI

Is troponin the same as NT-proBNP in dogs?
No. Troponin I shows injury to heart muscle cells, while NT-proBNP shows stretch and strain on the heart. Vets may ask for both, with a heart scan, to get a fuller picture.
Can a normal troponin result rule out heart disease in a dog?
No. Some heart diseases do not injure heart muscle enough to raise troponin I. Your vet reads the result with the dog's signs, an ECG and a heart scan.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.

Heart Blood Tests for Older Dogs: NT-proBNP and Troponin

NT-proBNP and troponin I are blood tests that can help your vet look at an older dog's heart, one for heart strain and one for heart muscle injury. Neither replaces a heart scan or an ECG.
