Canine Pancreatic Lipase (cPL)
Canine pancreatic lipase (cPL) is a blood test made for dogs that measures an enzyme released by the pancreas. A high level may point to pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas.

What this test checks
- Pancreatic lipase in the dog's serum
- Signs of inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
- How far the level is above the lab's normal range
- Change in the level over time if the test is repeated
Benefits of this test
- Looks only at lipase from the pancreas, so it is more specific than a routine lipase test.
- Helps the vet sort out pancreatitis from other causes of vomiting and belly pain.
- Needs only a simple blood sample from the dog.
- A normal result makes pancreatitis less likely, so the vet can look for other causes sooner.
- Can be repeated later if the vet wants to follow changes.
When your vet may advise it
- A dog is vomiting again and again.
- A dog has a painful belly, stands hunched or cries when the belly is touched.
- A dog is off food, dull or has diarrhoea after a very fatty meal or leftovers.
- A dog that had pancreatitis before shows similar signs again.
- A dog has fever and weakness along with an upset stomach.
About this test
The pancreas is a small organ near the stomach. It makes digestive juices, including an enzyme called lipase that breaks down fat. An enzyme is a substance that speeds up a process in the body. When the pancreas becomes inflamed (swollen and sore), a problem called pancreatitis, extra pancreatic lipase leaks into the blood.
This test measures canine pancreatic lipase in the serum, the clear liquid part of blood. It is made for dogs and reads only lipase that comes from the pancreas. A routine lipase test can also be raised by causes outside the pancreas, so it is less specific.
Vets use the test when a dog has vomiting, belly pain, poor appetite or tiredness. A high result supports pancreatitis, and a normal result makes it less likely. The vet decides after looking at the signs, other blood tests and often an ultrasound of the belly.
How to prepare
Follow your vet's advice about fasting before the blood draw, and take your dog to a vet at once if it is vomiting or in pain. Free sample collection is available anywhere in Bhopal, and reporting time is confirmed when you book. Outside Bhopal, the serum can reach us through your vet by courier or bus parcel, and we coordinate by phone or WhatsApp.
Reading the result
A raised cPL may suggest pancreatitis, while a normal value makes it less likely. A registered veterinarian reads it with your dog's signs, history, other blood tests and, where needed, an ultrasound.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
