Thyroid Profile (T3, T4 & TSH)

Thyroid Profile (T3, T4 & TSH)

The Thyroid Profile (T3, T4 and TSH) is a blood test that shows how well the thyroid gland is working in dogs and cats. It measures two thyroid hormones and the hormone that tells the thyroid to work.

What this test checks

  • T4 (thyroxine) level
  • T3 (triiodothyronine) level
  • TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) level
  • Total hormone, which is protein-bound plus free hormone
  • How the three values compare with each other

Benefits of this test

  • Gives three thyroid results from one serum sample.
  • Helps the vet look for an under-active thyroid in dogs and an over-active thyroid in cats.
  • Can help explain changes in weight, energy, coat or skin that have no clear cause.
  • Can be used to follow a pet that is already on thyroid treatment, as the vet advises.
  • Gives the vet a starting point for choosing other thyroid tests, such as free hormone tests.

When your vet may advise it

  • A dog is gaining weight without eating more, or seems tired, slow or sensitive to cold.
  • A dog has thinning hair on both sides of the body or a dull, dry coat.
  • A dog has skin or ear infections that keep coming back.
  • An older cat is losing weight even though it eats well.
  • An older cat drinks a lot, is restless, vomits or has a fast heartbeat.
  • A pet on thyroid medicine needs a check-up, as the vet advises.

About this test

The thyroid is a small gland in the neck. It makes two main hormones, T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). Hormones are chemical messengers, and these two set the pace of the body, including energy, weight, skin, coat and heart rate. A small gland under the brain, the pituitary, sends TSH to tell the thyroid how much to make.

This profile measures T3, T4 and TSH in serum, the clear liquid part of blood. It reports total T3 and T4, which means the hormone attached to proteins in the blood plus the free part. The free forms are measured in the separate Free Thyroid Profile.

In dogs, vets mostly look for an under-active thyroid. In cats, they mostly look for an over-active thyroid, usually in older cats. Reading the three values together gives a fuller picture than any one hormone alone.

How to prepare

Follow your vet's advice about fasting, tell the vet about every medicine your pet takes, and do not stop any medicine on your own. In Bhopal, sample collection is free wherever you are, and reporting time is confirmed when you book. If you live outside Bhopal, your vet can send the serum to us by courier or bus parcel, and we guide the process by phone or WhatsApp.

Reading the result

The vet compares T3, T4 and TSH with each other and with your pet's signs, because one odd value alone is not enough. A registered veterinarian may repeat the test or add others, such as a free hormone test, before deciding the next step.

Questions about Thyroid Profile (T3, T4 & TSH)

What is the difference between this profile and the Free Thyroid Profile?
This profile reports total T3 and T4, which includes hormone attached to blood proteins. The free profile measures only the unattached part that the body can use. Your vet chooses between them based on your pet's signs and earlier results.
Can illness or medicines change thyroid results?
Yes. Other illnesses and some medicines can lower thyroid hormone levels in a pet with a healthy thyroid, and illness can hide a thyroid problem in some cats. This is why the vet reads the profile with the signs and history, and may repeat it.
Which thyroid problem is common in dogs and cats?
In dogs, an under-active thyroid is the usual problem, mostly in middle-aged dogs. In cats, an over-active thyroid is the usual problem, mostly in older cats. Your vet will tell you which one to look for in your pet.
Why is TSH tested along with T3 and T4?
Because TSH is the signal that tells the thyroid to make hormone, and reading it with T4 gives the vet more to go on. In dogs, an under-active thyroid often shows a low T4 with a high TSH. Dog-specific T4 and TSH tests are also listed separately.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
