What this test checks
- Vitamin D3 level in the serum
- The stored form of vitamin D, which shows the body's reserve
- Whether the level is low, normal or high compared with the normal range
- Change in the level over time if the test is repeated
Benefits of this test
- Shows the actual vitamin D level, so the vet does not have to guess from the diet alone.
- Helps find a shortage in pets that eat home-cooked or unbalanced food.
- Helps the vet look into calcium and bone problems in puppies, kittens and adult pets.
- Can show too much vitamin D when supplements or certain poisons are suspected.
- Can be repeated later to follow the level, as the vet advises.
When your vet may advise it
- A puppy or kitten has soft or bent leg bones, or limps without an injury.
- Blood calcium or phosphorus is abnormal on another test.
- A pet has long-term diarrhoea, poor weight gain or poor absorption of food.
- A pet has been fed a home-cooked or unbalanced diet for a long time.
- Your vet suspects too much vitamin D from supplements or certain rat poisons.
- A pet has long-term kidney or heart disease and the vet wants to check vitamin D.
About this test
Vitamin D helps the body take calcium and phosphorus from food and keep bones and teeth strong. It also supports muscles, nerves and the body's defence against germs. Unlike people, dogs and cats cannot make enough vitamin D from sunlight, so they depend on their food.
For this test, blood is drawn into a plain tube and spun so that the clear liquid part, called serum, separates. The lab measures the vitamin D3 level in the serum. Labs usually measure the stored form of the vitamin, because it shows how much the body has in reserve.
Vets use the test when they think a pet is short of vitamin D, for example on an unbalanced home-cooked diet or with long-term gut disease. It also helps when too much vitamin D is a worry, such as after too many supplements.
How to prepare
Follow your vet's advice about fasting, and tell the vet about every supplement and the type of food your pet eats. Our team collects the sample free anywhere in Bhopal, and reporting time is confirmed when you book. If you are outside Bhopal, ask your vet to send the serum to our lab by courier or bus parcel, and message us on WhatsApp to coordinate.
Reading the result
A registered veterinarian reads the vitamin D value together with calcium, phosphorus, diet, signs and history. A low or high value is a clue for the vet to follow up, not a diagnosis on its own.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
