IgE (Immunoglobulin E)
IgE (Immunoglobulin E) is a blood test that measures IgE, an antibody the body makes in allergy and in some parasite infections. It can give your vet a clue when a dog or cat has long-term itching or skin problems.

What this test checks
- Level of IgE antibody in serum
- How active the body's allergy-type defence response may be
- A general clue to allergy, not the name of the allergen
- A level that can also rise with some parasite infections
Benefits of this test
- Gives your vet one more clue when itching or skin problems keep coming back.
- Needs only one blood sample, so it is simple to collect.
- Helps your vet decide whether to look further into allergy.
- Can be read with other tests to separate allergy from look-alike causes such as parasites.
When your vet may advise it
- A dog or cat has itching, redness or hair loss that keeps coming back.
- A dog has repeated ear infections or keeps licking and chewing its paws.
- A cat over-grooms, has scabs on the head and neck, or has patchy hair loss.
- Your vet suspects allergy and wants a blood test as one part of the check.
- A pet with skin problems has been checked for fleas and mites, and the cause is still unclear.
About this test
IgE, or immunoglobulin E, is an antibody, a protein of the body's defence system. It plays a part in allergic reactions and in the response to some parasites. Allergy to things like pollen, dust, moulds or food can make dogs and cats itchy and cause skin and ear problems.
The lab measures the amount of IgE in serum, the clear liquid part of the blood, taken in a plain tube. The report shows the IgE level. It does not name the food, pollen or dust that a pet may be allergic to.
Vets use it as one clue when they look into long-term itching or skin allergy. They also use a skin examination, checks for fleas, mites and infections, and the pet's history. A raised IgE does not diagnose allergy on its own, and a normal IgE does not rule it out.
How to prepare
Fasting is usually not needed, but follow your vet's advice. Tell your vet about any medicines your pet takes for itching or allergy, and do not stop them on your own. Free sample collection is available anywhere in Bhopal; from other places your vet can send the sample by courier or bus parcel, and reporting time is confirmed when you book.
Reading the result
A raised IgE may support the idea of allergy, but it is also seen with some parasite infections and does not name the cause. A registered veterinarian reads the result with the pet's skin signs, history and other tests.
Questions about IgE

Can this test tell me which food my pet is allergic to?
Why can IgE be raised even when my pet has no allergy?
Should I stop my pet's itch medicine before the test?
Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.

IgE Blood Tests in Itchy Pets: What They Can and Cannot Show
An IgE blood test can help show whether a dog's or cat's body is making allergy-type antibodies, but it cannot explain every itch. Mite and fungus tests are usually done first, and a vet reads the results together.
