Foal IgG

Foal IgG (Passive Transfer) Test

The foal IgG test measures IgG antibodies in a young foal's blood to show whether it took in enough protection from the mare's first milk. It can help your vet decide if the foal needs extra care.

Often discussed at these ages:Foal

When your vet may advise it

  • A newborn foal, soon after it has had its first feeds
  • A foal that was weak, slow to stand or slow to suckle
  • A foal from a mare that leaked milk before birth, as your vet advises

About this test

A foal is born with almost no antibodies and depends on the mare's first milk, called colostrum, to give it protection. This is called passive transfer. If a foal does not drink enough good colostrum, or does not absorb it well, it can fall ill easily with infections. The foal IgG test measures IgG, the main antibody, in a serum sample soon after birth. The lab report shows the result against the reference range. A registered veterinarian reads it with the foal's health and decides what to do next; the lab gives no advice on treatment.

How to prepare

Blood is taken from the foal into a plain tube by a vet, who knows the right time for the sample. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Questions about Foal IgG

Why do foals need colostrum?
Foals are born with very few antibodies. The mare's first milk gives them antibodies that protect against infection in the first weeks of life. The IgG test shows whether enough were absorbed.
What happens if the foal IgG result is low?
Your vet decides what to do. A low result tells the vet that the foal may need extra care and close watching. The lab does not give treatment advice.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
