Bull Semen Evaluation
Bull semen evaluation checks how well sperm move, how many there are and how many are abnormal in semen from cattle and buffalo bulls. It helps your vet judge whether a bull, or a batch of frozen semen, is fit for breeding.

What this test checks
- Mass and individual motility, meaning how actively the sperm move
- Sperm concentration, meaning how many sperm are in the sample
- Abnormal forms, such as sperm with faulty heads or bent tails
- How well sperm move after a frozen semen straw is thawed
When your vet may advise it
- Before buying a breeding bull or buffalo bull
- When several cows or buffaloes served by the same bull do not become pregnant
- After a bull has had a fever, injury or illness that may affect fertility
- To check the quality of frozen semen straws before they are used
About this test
A bull that looks strong can still have poor semen, so cows and buffaloes served by him may not get pregnant. Semen evaluation looks at motility (how the sperm move), concentration (how many sperm there are) and abnormal forms (sperm with a faulty head or tail). Fresh semen is delicate, so its handling is agreed with the lab, and frozen straws are thawed only at the time of checking. This evaluation is one part of a breeding soundness check. It does not test for infections carried in semen, so your vet may add disease tests. A registered veterinarian interprets the report together with the bull's examination.
How to prepare
A vet or trained technician collects fresh semen, and how it is kept on the way is agreed with the lab. Frozen straws must stay frozen until tested. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
