Horse Fever & Respiratory RT-PCR Panel

Influenza, herpesvirus and strangles RT-PCR with a CBC and SAA, for horses with fever and cough.

5 tests in one package · Sample: Nasal swab + whole blood (EDTA) + serum

The Horse Fever & Respiratory RT-PCR Panel groups RT-PCR tests for three common causes of fever, cough and nasal discharge in horses: influenza, herpesvirus and strangles. A CBC and equine SAA show how the body is reacting. These infections spread easily between horses, so finding the cause early helps a vet protect the stable. A registered veterinarian reads the results together with the animal's signs and history.

Tests inside this package

  • Equine influenza RT-PCR

This RT-PCR test looks for equine influenza virus in a nasal swab from a horse with fever and cough. It is an RNA virus, so the test first turns the RNA into DNA before it copies it.

RT-PCR / Molecular TestsSample: Nasal swab

  • Equine herpesvirus (EHV-1 & EHV-4) RT-PCR

This RT-PCR test looks for equine herpesvirus 1 and 4 (EHV-1 and EHV-4) in a nasal swab or blood sample. These viruses cause fever, cough and, in mares, abortion. The exact list is confirmed when you book.

RT-PCR / Molecular TestsSample: Nasal swab or whole blood (EDTA)

  • Strangles (Streptococcus equi) RT-PCR

This RT-PCR test looks for Streptococcus equi, the bacterium that causes strangles, in a nasal swab, guttural pouch wash or pus from an abscess. It can help your vet confirm strangles and protect other horses.

RT-PCR / Molecular TestsSample: Nasal swab, guttural pouch wash or abscess pus

  • CBC

A CBC counts the red cells, white cells and platelets in a blood sample and can help show anaemia (low red cells), infection or inflammation (the body's reaction to injury). It suits dogs, cats, cows and buffaloes.

HaematologySample: Whole blood (EDTA)Single test: ₹400

  • Equine SAA

Equine SAA measures serum amyloid A, a protein that rises quickly in a horse's blood when there is inflammation or infection. It can help your vet see whether a horse is unwell and how it is responding.

Canine & Feline Specific AssaysSample: Serum (plain) or heparin plasma

Questions about this package

Which samples are needed?
A deep nasal swab for the RT-PCR tests, and blood for the CBC and SAA. A vet takes the samples and the lab tells you how to keep them cool.
Can a negative result rule these infections out?
Not always. A sample taken late, or with very little germ, can give a negative result. Your vet may repeat the test.
Should sick horses be kept apart?
Ask your vet. These infections spread between horses, and your vet knows what is right for your stable.

Packages support your veterinarian’s decisions; they do not replace an examination. A registered veterinarian should read the results together with your animal’s signs and history.

Strangles in Horses: How the Lab Confirms It

Strangles is a contagious horse infection with fever, nasal discharge and swollen glands under the jaw. The lab can help confirm it with RT-PCR on a nasal swab, a guttural pouch wash or pus from an abscess.

Equine SAA: The Inflammation Marker in Horses
