What this test checks
- Progesterone level in serum
- Presence of a corpus luteum (the progesterone-making body)
- Rise of progesterone around ovulation in dogs and cats
- Whether a cow or buffalo is cycling or has inactive ovaries
- Rising or falling trend when samples are repeated
Benefits of this test
- Helps plan the right days for mating or artificial insemination in dogs.
- Can show whether a female cat has ovulated after mating.
- Helps look into fertility problems in cows and buffaloes, such as no heat or repeated failure to conceive.
- A low value about three weeks after insemination may suggest that a cow or buffalo is not pregnant.
- Needs only a blood sample, and repeat samples can follow the trend.

When your vet may advise it
- A female dog is in heat and the owner wants to plan the days for mating or insemination.
- A female cat has been mated and the vet wants to know whether she ovulated.
- A cow or buffalo is not coming into heat, or her heat signs are weak or unclear.
- A cow or buffalo has been inseminated several times without conceiving.
- A cow or buffalo is about three weeks past insemination and the vet wants an early hint on whether she may have conceived.
About this test
Progesterone is a hormone made mainly by the corpus luteum, a small yellow body that forms on the ovary after an egg is released. Its level in the blood rises and falls in a pattern through the heat cycle and pregnancy. This test measures progesterone in serum, the clear part of the blood after it clots.
In female dogs, progesterone helps the vet judge when ovulation (the release of an egg) is happening, so the right days for mating or insemination can be chosen. In female cats, a rise after mating may show that ovulation has happened. In cows and buffaloes, it helps show whether the ovaries are cycling. It can help the vet look into animals that do not come into heat or do not conceive.
Progesterone changes from day to day, so the result makes sense only if the vet knows the date of heat signs, mating or insemination. Dogs may need repeat samples every few days. Reporting time is confirmed when you book.
How to prepare
Fasting is usually not needed, but follow your vet's advice. Note the date heat signs began and the dates of any mating or insemination, and tell the vet or the lab, because the result cannot be read without them; dogs may need repeat samples. You can book free sample collection anywhere in Bhopal, and from outside Bhopal the blood or serum can be sent by courier, bus parcel or through your local vet.
Reading the result
Your registered veterinarian reads the progesterone value against the day of the cycle, the animal's signs and, in dogs, usually vaginal cytology or repeat samples. The vet then explains what it means for mating, ovulation or fertility.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
