Canine Vaccination Antibody Titre (Distemper, Parvo & Adenovirus)
The canine vaccination antibody titre test measures a dog's antibodies against distemper, parvovirus and adenovirus, the core vaccine viruses. It can show whether a protective antibody level is present; the decision about re-vaccination stays with your vet.

What this test checks
- Antibody titre (level) against canine distemper virus
- Antibody titre against canine parvovirus
- Antibody titre against canine adenovirus, which can cause infectious hepatitis
- Whether each level is in the protective range shown on the lab report
Benefits of this test
- Can show whether a dog has a protective antibody level against the three core vaccine viruses.
- Can help your vet check whether a puppy responded to its vaccines.
- Helpful for dogs that had a vaccine reaction before, or have an illness that makes vaccination a concern.
- Gives your vet extra information when planning an adult dog's vaccines.
- Needs only a small serum sample from a routine blood draw.

About this test
Vaccines teach a dog's immune system to make antibodies. Antibodies are proteins in the blood that help the body fight a germ. The core vaccines for dogs protect against three serious viruses: canine distemper virus, which can affect the lungs, gut and nerves; canine parvovirus, which causes severe vomiting and bloody diarrhoea; and canine adenovirus, which can cause infectious hepatitis, a serious liver disease. These diseases spread between dogs and can be fatal, especially in puppies, so vaccination is an important part of every dog's care.
This test measures the antibody titre for each of these viruses in a serum sample. A titre is a measure of how much antibody is in the blood. The report shows whether the level for each virus is in the range linked with protection, using the range given on the lab report. Vets may use it to check whether a puppy responded to its vaccines, to look at an adult dog's immunity when planning vaccines, or when a dog has had a reaction to a vaccine in the past or has an illness that makes vaccination a concern.
A titre result supports, but does not replace, your vet's vaccination plan. A low or negative result does not always mean the dog is unprotected, because the body also has memory cells that this test cannot measure, and a good result does not mean other vaccines are no longer needed. The test does not check rabies or leptospirosis, which your vet plans separately. Antibodies from the mother can also affect results in young puppies. A registered veterinarian reads the result with the dog's age, vaccination record, health and lifestyle, and decides whether re-vaccination or more tests are needed.
How to prepare
No fasting is usually needed; a small blood sample is taken into a plain tube for serum, and you should bring the dog's vaccination record with dates so the vet can judge the timing. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.
Reading the result
A registered veterinarian reads the titre result with the dog's age, vaccination record and health. A level in the protective range suggests the dog responded to vaccination. A low result may mean the dog needs re-vaccination or a repeat test, but it does not always mean no protection. The decision about vaccines belongs to your vet; do not skip vaccines based on this test alone.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
