What this test checks
- The titre, or strength, of antibodies to Brucella in serum
- Whether a positive Rose Bengal screening result is backed up by a tube test
- Antibody levels your vet can compare between animals in a herd, or over time
When your vet may advise it
- After a positive Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT) result
- Abortions late in pregnancy, retained afterbirth or repeat breeding in the herd
- Bulls with swollen testicles, or animals with swollen knee joints
- Before buying cows, buffaloes or breeding bulls, if your vet advises
About this test
Brucellosis is a bacterial infection that can cause abortion late in pregnancy, retained afterbirth and poor fertility in cows and buffaloes, and swollen testicles in bulls. The Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT) is a quick screening test, and the STAT is commonly used to follow up a positive result. In the STAT, the serum is diluted step by step in a row of tubes and mixed with Brucella antigen, and the highest dilution that still clumps gives the titre. Animals vaccinated against brucellosis can also show antibodies, so the vaccine history matters. A registered veterinarian decides what the titre means for the animal and the herd.
How to prepare
Tell your vet whether the animal was vaccinated against brucellosis and about any abortions in the herd. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.
Questions about STAT
Can brucellosis spread from cows to humans?
If my cow is negative on STAT, is she free of brucellosis?
Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
